Beware of temporary price raising

Always keep track of the regular pricing of an item. A nasty trick that some retailers use is ‘temporary price raising.' For a short period they will increase the price of an item . That way, once they reduce it back to its original price they can have a sign indicating that it is on special

Laminate payment barcodes

If you pay your bills at the post office, laminate the part of the bill that they need to scan and keep it in your purse. Each time you visit the post office, you can start to pay a little off your bill. Works great for the larger bills.

21:21 Rule

A good way not to get bogged down decluttering your home, is to use the 21:21 time rule. Walk into a room and pick up 21 things that are in the wrong place and put it away and find 21 things that needs to be thrown out or given away. You can change the number as you get less clutter

Write down receipt numbers

Do you really need to keep all your old bills and receipts? A simple way to still maintain an accurate record with less clutter, is to draw up a ‘receipt record sheet' table with six columns (item, date, amount paid, receipt no#, payment method, note)

icon

Master shopping list

Attach a clipboard to the inside door of your pantry. Keep your master shopping list as well a blank sheet of paper to make notes e.g. ‘ginger biscuits expiring on 12/11' The master shopping list can be typed onto your compute and printed as needed. Whenever you run out of an item, just highlight the item on the list.

The 'chore lucky dip'

Get several small squares of paper and write down a simple chore that takes 10 minutes to complete on each one. Put the squares of paper in a small box. Whenever you have 10 minutes to spare, grab a piece of paper and do that chore. It's also a great way to keep kids interested in doing chores. Have a separate box just for them.

Kid's birthday clubs

Plan ahead for your child's birthday by signing them up to birthday clubs. Local restaurants, video stores, mini golf courses, swimming pools and bowling alleys are just a few of the places that offer either free passes/meals or heavily discounted services on your child's birthday and sometimes even for the entire month. This also makes a great gift for nieces and nephews.

Make your own cereal boxes

If your kids love cereal boxes that have bright and colourful character on them, and cost more because of this, why not get them to decorate their own cereal boxes. Get an empty cereal box, a piece of A4 paper or cardboard and let them design their own cereal box. They can draw pictures, paint or cut out pictures of their favourite characters. You can then glue it onto the box, laminate it, or put it into plastic sheets (cutting out the holes) and stick this on the box and change the picture each week. You can then refill this box with whatever cereal you like. .

Split the costs

If you are finding it hard to keep up with kid's afterschool lesson's such as learning to play an instrument, ask the teacher if you can split the slot with another student who is also having hardship. For example, one week your daughter may have lessons, and the second week another child. This works well in schools that make you pay for the term fee upfront.
